If the IRS is coming for you, we can help!
"Oh No!!! I got a letter from the IRS," you say, going through your mail only to be greeted by a formal letter from the Internal Revenue Service.
The first thing most people do is panic! Your stress level increases and you already feel defeated. The letters are complicated and written in a way that you are not used to seeing.
There are tons of different reasons the IRS sends letters, and the first thing you should do is OPEN IT. You don’t have to understand what it means but please open it. If you can’t bring yourself to open it – bring it to me and I will open it. You would be surprised at the amount of clients who come in with a stack of unopened mail because they could not bear to deal with it.
You can CALL ME right now if you are too stressed to do anything else. Or you can keep reading.
You may get multiple letters. That’s because each year stands alone. The IRS will not send you a single letter about 2014, 2015 and 2016. You will get 3 separate letters. There might be a different problem for each year or it might be the same problem.
You can call the IRS yourself but here is why I don’t advise doing that. First – the IRS agents are trained professionals and they will ask you a LOT of questions. You may feel you have given a complete answer. There is a fine line between saying too little and saying too much. Often clients don’t realize that their answer should have been SHORTER or MORE detailed in order to accurately answer the question. Then when I am hired to resolve the tax issues, I have to try and “fix” the problem created by the client without even realizing it. For example – the IRS agent will say to me: “the Taxpayer said “A” and now you are saying “B”. Which is it?? I can work through the issues to get to the right answer but it requires a lot more work.
My best advice: Be sure to keep all letters you receive from the IRS or any other taxing agency. It’s a start for when you come to see me.
Calm down: If you don’t have some (or any) of the letters, don’t worry. I can also get the information I need directly from the IRS or any other tax agency from my St. Louis office.
I promise you – I have seen your situation before. I won’t be surprised and I won’t make you feel bad for whatever information you have or don’t have when you come to see me.
We have to start somewhere and that’s wherever you happen to be at this moment.
